Samuel ben Avigdor

Samuel ben Avigdor
(1720-93)
Lithuanian rabbi. Between 1719 and 1746 he served as rabbi of Pruzhany, Zelwa, Volkovysk and Ruzhany. In 1750 he became rabbi of Vilna, succeeding his father-in-law, Judah ben Eliezer. In 1777 the community decided to remove him from office because he was suspected of nepotism, but a compromise was reached. In 1782 the controversy broke out again, and the dispute was brought before Jewish and gentile courts. Samuel ben Avigdor was dismissed from his post and Vilna was left without a rabbi. He was an ardent opponent of Hasidism.
